Copenhagen’s latest roof bars

New York has them, London has them, Hong Kong has them - you’ll find roof bars all round the world and they’re now springing up in Copenhagen. Some are up in the clouds, others at less giddy heights, but all combine fantastic views with everything a good bar should offer. Here’s where you should hang out in summer.

The new roof terrace at Silo

Gourmet restaurant Silo already had a fabulous 360-degree view, and the futuristic tower block in Nordhavn has played an ace with a roof bar on the 18th floor. It’s been designed to make maximum use of the summer with BBQ evenings, live music and the At Last it’s Friday bar concept Silo Sunset. “The roof bar is a bit more relaxed than Restaurant Silo,” says Malou Haase Tøndering, PR & Sales, “and we’re keen to try various different concepts and arrangements here in the roof bar”.“At midsummer, we celebrated Sankt Hans Evening with views of all the bonfires around the city, and future arrangements include yoga under the bare sky on a Sunday morning. We can see the whole of Copenhagen from here, and want to return the compliment to the city,” says Tøndering. “It's also a privilege to help shape life in a new part of town.”

Tramonto at Hotel Ottilia

Hotel Ottilia in the Carlsberg Village is a fusion of the listed former brewery buildings and super modern hotel design. And the icing on the cake is the beautiful Italian restaurant and Tramonto roof bar on the 5th floor, with views of the historic Carlsberg architecture, the trees in Søndermarken Park and the new town that is taking shape in the area. The terrace gets sun all day and has an outdoor stove and a small hop garden.“It's a bit of a nod to the building’s past. Eventually, we hope to make flour from the hop shoots for pizza, for a genuine circular system,” says events coordinator Ulla Farlov. The Tramonto roof terrace can hold 150 people, and is a popular venue for events and intimate concerts, attracting guests from near and far. “We have plenty of gastro tourists, who fly in to stay at the hotel and eat here,” says Farlov. “It's a really special place with a special history, you won’t find anything like it anywhere else in the world.”

Nimb Roof

This upmarket boutique hotel next to Tivoli hides a bit of a secret, namely a remarkable roof terrace, that opened last summer. The terrace has a heated pool with wave machine, sun loungers and views over the city rooftops and Tivoli Gardens. It’s the perfect setting for summer events such as the sunset lounge, jazz concerts and cook-outs. Tuesday has quickly become party evening with shellfish, fish and meat on the BBQ, plus plenty of rosé. Not to mention all kinds of sparkling wines, wine, cocktails and a poolside menu with dishes from Sticks’n’sushi. The roof terrace is open from early morning to late evening, and is primarily for Nimb Club members and hotel guests. Otherwise, you can gain entrance to the roof terrace via a ticket to an event here, or in association with a spa treatment at the exclusive Nimb Wellness.

Roof bar at Citizen M

Dutch hotel chain Citizen M recently opened a new 4-star hotel in Dagmarhus by Rådhuspladsen. You can sense the real wow factor the moment you check in, as the reception is on the top floor next to the roof bar. Here on the 7th floor, you have Rådhustårnet (City Hall Tower) outside the window and views over the very center of the city. The roof bar’s panoramic windows and cool, colorful design with book shelves, corner sofas and lightning fast WiFi make it an extension of your living room, home office and café, where you can eat, drink and hang out any time of day and night. “Our guests might have arrived from a totally different time zone, and we naturally want to meet their needs,” says receptionist Agata. The roof terrace is open to both hotel guests and anyone else who wants to admire the views. And if you’ve got a deadline to meet, you can make it your home office all day for Dkr125.
